COMMUNICATION, VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERING
PROTOCOLS

In Western Australia, parents and carers, school staff and students share responsibility for public schools providing safe, supportive and productive learning environments.

We achieve this through our relationships, good communication and working together.

At Piara Waters Primary School, we believe that education is a partnership between our team of educators and a child’s most important teachers — their parents.

Quality communication is our goal, therefore, the school acknowledges the role of parents as joint partners and welcomes your involvement. We aim to communicate effectively with everyone in our community, and therefore we use a range of strategies and mediums to suit the different needs and preferences of parents, caregivers and community members.

We adopt the Department of Education Communication Protocols which can be found here

VOLUNTEERING AT OUR SCHOOL

Recent changes to the Working with Children Check legislation, which helps keep our students safe apply to parents who volunteer.
Parents will need to sign a ‘Parent and child volunteer declaration form’ before volunteering at our school.

You cannot volunteer if you have a Working with Children Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice.

Volunteering includes, for example:

·         Helping with reading or attending a day excursion

·         Presenting an award at an assembly

·         Assisting at a sports carnival

·         Conducting P&C duties.

Volunteering does not include, for example:

·         picking up and dropping off your child

·         watching an event, like a school assembly

·         attending a parent and teacher interview

When you attend the school to volunteer, you will sign in at the front office and we will ask you to complete the form.

You will be asked to complete the form annually if you want to continue volunteering at the school. If your circumstances change, and you are issued with a Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice after you complete the form, you need to notify the Principal and stop volunteering immediately.

All other family members and friends over 18 years of age who want to volunteer must have a current Working with Children Check.

VISITORS AND CONTRACTORS

All visitors and contractors are required to sign in at the front office, this includes before and after school (when the front office is open.)

Contractors, therapists, and volunteers must complete our health and safety induction. They need to complete the induction on the first day they visit the school. From the date of first completion, they will need to complete the induction again in 12 months, and then every following 12 months.  The induction link is available at the front office.

In the Work Health and Safety Act, ‘workers’ includes anyone who carries out work for a person conducting a business or undertaking. Workers include:

  • employees
  • contractors and subcontractors
  • self-employed persons
  • volunteers
  • apprentices or trainees
  • outworkers
  • labour-hire company employees
  • school or TAFE students completing work experience or work placements
  • university students completing professional experiences.

Workers also have a duty to take reasonable care of themselves and to follow instructions for health and safety.
